Clutch wear is related to the driver, previous driver in this case, so
we don't know for certain that it is worn out. If he slipped it, held the
car at stoplights on hills, rested his foot on the pedal when driving,
etc, it could be worn to the point of slipping. 44M miles is very early
for one to be worn if clutch is used properly.
You have probably noticed the cotter pin poking out through the bottom
of the clutch housing. That pin jiggles in the hole so that oil dripping
from the seals has a way to drain out onto the ground. If the gearbox
and engine oil levels are as specified, I don't believe that the oil
touches the seals when engine is stationary, so if the car has not been
used for many years it's probably not oil from that cause. But, yes, it
is possible that the seals in gearbox or engine have leaked and wet the
clutch. If that's the case, and I don't know how you would determine
that without separating engine and gearbox, replacing the clutch assembly
is the right fix.
There is no adjustment to these clutches.
