The tube axle has a normal thread both sides. I had to use a 5 foot breaker
bar on mine - wheel back on and on the ground with centre cap removed -
before one side could be shifted. Hammering a breaker bar probably doesn't
do much - too much inertia in the bar - it just need a long enough lever and
enough weight. But on another axle lying on the ground I got both sides off
without problem. Once the nut is off the hub is on a taper, I used metal
wedges between the back of the hub and the heads of the backplate bolts to
shift it.
