I usually check the points and condenser first. First the points gap. And I 
check the connection of the condenser to the post, verifying the nut is 
tight and the wire connects to the post such that its properly insulated 
against the post itself. If that checks out or its been a while, I'll go 
ahead and replace points/condenser/rotor, maybe even the cap since the 
parts are all inexpensive.
