A "knacker" was from the Cockney rhyming slang for "hacker". A hack being
a horse drawn taxi in London (UK). Somehow knackered became what a horse
was at the end of its shift - tired, and applied to people. then
things. SO a knackered bearing is one that is tired, bust, damaged!!!!
It also became the name of where old horses went when they were no longer
of use (what a cruel world). This was the "knackers" yard - where they
were butchered, sold as horse meat and/or bones made into glue!!!
