Ah, another topic I became initmately familiar with this Spring. I did
this one so many times I have the procedure down by heart.
First, if you have not done so yet, remove the header. Yes, it's a
PITA, but it makes life easier.
Second, the right tool is everything. Get a 1" socket, deep enough so
when you put the cap in, just a few threads show. I bought mine at
AutoZone.
Third, the right technique makes life easy. Put the relief valve,
packing piece, and spring in the block. Put the cap and and washer in
the socket. Lean on the passenger fender, lay across the engine, and
screw the cap in.
The socket keeps the cap straight and gives you something easy to turn.
By pushing the socket straight against the block, you keep the threads
on the cap square to the block. A few twists and you're in. I got to
do this about four or five times this year.
