I've never tried this, but have always wondered if something like this
would work.

1)  Run the engine until warm and drain the oil.  Leave plug out and do
not refill.  Leave a drip tray under the drain hole.

2)  Rotate the engine until the piston is past TDC and partially down on
the power stroke (post compression).

3)  Fill the cylinder with a cup or two of kerosene (paraffin).

4)  Pressurize the cylinder with air as one would with a leak down test.

5)  Keep pressurizing the cylinder and wait several days until all the
kerosene has  been forced out.

6)  If the kerosene didn't work, perhaps one could use lacquer thinner
or other highly solvent material.

7)  Replace the drain plug, fill with fresh oil, and then run the engine
checking for oil leaks.
