the intermittant generator light went away when i topped off the batteries
(they were low!).  i had also cleaned the ground connection back there, but
that didn't help (this problem - i'm sure that was a good preventative
maintenance item!).

i'll let you know when/how i solve the tail lights.

the gas gage was screwy until i found it had come loose from its ground.
now it works great.
