The speedo is driven by a magnetic link. The odo and trip odo are driven
by a picker arm that's driven by an eccentric cam on the main rotary
input; this arm picks the wheels forward one tooth at a time. What
usually fails is the bond between the shiny pins the wheels are
press-fitted onto and the wheels themselves, so that instead of turning
the wheel, the drive-pin just slips inside the wheel. This usually
happens when the odo is passing a number of nines to a zero; the extra
effort needed to move all the wheels at once proves too much for the
decades-old press-fit and the pin starts to slip. It's possible to
disassemble the wheel unit and abrade the pin where it needs to be tight
and then apply a microscopic speck of superglue there and then fit the
wheel in the right position before it sets up. This is not easy to do.
