That was what I thought I did when I "slipped it and a washer that was
there originally on the end of the little hose", but I thought about
your description again...

I went back out to the shed and pushed the washer and seal (or "gland"
as I am now informed it may be called - yuk) along the hose- it won't
go very far because the coiled, springlike hose cover won't compress
far but the little tip on the end of the hose will poke out.
Now I thought about the tip of that hose poking into the "pilot hole in
the bottom of the port" as I stuck it in. Remember, this is done by
"feel" - but I thought this time I felt it "slot in".
I did up the nut again and...

WOOHOO - yes, it worked. No fuel spilling out!
Barney to the rescue again - and I have learned one more of those
"little tricks" that I can pass on to someone else struggling with
these mysteries in the future!
