Keith:

You didn't state what year MGB. If you are looking to do an engine swap
in your '69 be really careful. The steering rack location limits a lot
of swaps, so plan on having to do some pretty drastic re-arranging to
install any other power plant. Most modern engines are pretty long,
even the V6 ones.

The critical areas to watch for are:

1. Overall length of the engine.
You may have to relocate the rack to rubber bumper location.
2. Location of ancillaries.
The engine bay is pretty narrow at the bottom, so alternators need to
mount high.
3. Location of water outlet.
Clearance to the radiator location may be a problem.
4. Exhaust port location.
Check clearance to the steering shaft.
5. Oil filter location.
See item 2. clearance to frame rail may be an issue.

Any of these problems can be overcome, but the question becomes how much
work do you want to do.

The 60 degree GM V6 is a well documented conversion, so I'd suggest
using it as the time and material comparison.

My honest opinion is that if you go into an engine swap with the idea of
"doable and somewhat inexpensive" you are fooling yourself and are
likely to botch up what would otherwise be a nice car.

Please take this in the best way possible. From your closing, I'm
assuming you will.

Before modifying a car, always look at what it will take to do the best
job possible, so you will have a safe vehicle that you can be proud of.
There are a lot of modified cars out there that look cool, go fast in a
straight line, but are an absolute PITA to maintain, drive and own.
There are a lot of cars (one of mine included) that get chopped on, then
dumped because the job wasn't done to an adequate standard.
