Steve,
Probably because:
1. release bearing worn down too far
2. clutch plate worn down too far
3. pivot pin and/or bushing for release lever badly worn
4. someone has cut length of slave pushrod
5. clevis pin and/or pushrod hole badly worn
6. some or all of the above
