If the ignition light comes on then part of the switch at least is working.
Are you sure it isn't the starter relay or the connections between it and
the ignition switch?  The switch should put out 12v on a white/red to one
side of the relay energising coil.  The other side of the energising coil
should go to a ground.  If this shows 12v when you turn the key to crank the
ground is bad.  A brown (unfused always live, be careful) should go to one
of the relay contacts and a white/brown from the other contact to the
solenoid.  There should be 12v on both these contacts when the ignition
switch is turned to crank.
