Desmond,

Welcome to the MG's list!!

You can turn the O/D off at any time you like, clutch down or clutch up,
your choice. If you are in gear and got no throttle (engine braking) it
can be a bit jerky, but if you have a bit of throttle it isn't too bad.
You won't do the O/D or anything else any harm by switching it off (or
on) while in gear.

There is a switch on the gearbox that SHOULD prevent the O/D working in
Reverse, 1st and 2nd (3rd too in a few cars I believe) - the O/D unit
can't cope with the torque in 1st and 2nd, and if it's on when you try
to reverse it will be instantly wrecked. So (as long as this switch
works), switching the switch in R, 1 or 2 will have no effect. You can
switch it on or off quite happily in 3rd, 4th, or in neutral inbetween,
clutch in or out.

If you change down from 3rd to 2nd while the O/D is on, the gearbox
switch will automatically turn the O/D off even if you don't flick your
switch - this can catch you out with a slightly bigger downchange than
you were expecting, with consequently more engine braking! Similarly,
if you go back up to 3rd again and the switch is still on, you will jump
straight from 2nd to 3rd+O/D (which is similar to going straight from
2nd to 4th in a normal car).

Hope this is all clear now!
