Within 10 km the gearbox casing is too hot to place a bare hand on it.
My
guess is that it is somewhere above 60 degrees Celsius. The heat is NOT
being transferred from the motor through the alloy bell housing.
Can anybody please advise if this may be normal?
I have replaced the gearbox bearings with new bearings. All else looks
OK
and all shafts spin quite freely. I am using the correct 30 weight
gearbox
oil.
I would appreciate a reply if you have any information or knowledge that
may
help me. I will gladly acknowledge all replies.
Thank you in anticipation. Best regards>>

Fred,

I dug out my "Morgan four wheeler workshop manual" that covers "all four
wheel models up to 1963." I'm not sure of the origin of this manual,
but it contains a supplement citing the Morgan Plus/4 Club of America.

According to this manual, the following lubricants are recommended (p.
43)

"CC and SS - SAE.90. V, TR.2, TR.3 - SAE.30. F.-Castrol Hypoy 80."

The notation on the same page explains the abbreviations:
CC=Coventry Climax
SS=Standard Special
V=Vanguard
F=Ford 100E.

As Will Zehring correctly pointed out, the Moss gearbox is not attached
to the bellhousing of the engine, but is located directly under the
gearshift. Of course, you know that since you said that you've worked
on the gearbox. Presumably, you have the Standard/Vanguard/TR engine,
and the 30-wt oil you've been using should be the correct viscosity.

Do the shafts spin freely with the gearbox installed? Could there be a
misalignment of the gearbox wrt. to shaft leading from the engine? I
haven't taken a good look at my '52 +4, so I'm only guessing, of course.

Hope you find the problem soon and, if you do, let us know.
