Dave,

The high beam light should be blue. My 73 4/4 has rocker style dash
switches, sourced by Morgans from Jaguar. Many of the problems with turn
indicators stem from the fact that everything is wired through the hazard
lights switch which is the central switch on the bottom row. I had been
having ongoing problems with indicators and hazard lights all of which were
remedied by replacing this switch.

Now for the bad news. Theses switches are like the proverbial rocking horse
excrement. If you can find them new they will cost about 20 pounds Sterling
($50+ here in Australia). I did manage to source a second hand one from a
local Jaguar wreckers for about half this price.

On another matter I recently undertook a run from Brisbane to Sydney and
back over a long weekend (2000 miles total). The car started running rough
which at first I took to be carburettors (twin DCOE 40s). In fact the
problem was cured by spraying the inside of the distributor (behind the
points where the advance mechanism is located) with lubricant. On return to
Brisbane I sought some professional advice from the local racing guys.

The first question was "what type of distributor do you have?"

"autolite" I replied in innocence.

After making a sign to ward off the evil eye this guy informs me that these
are best suited to filing in the large round drum in the back corner of the
workshop.
Apparently the dwell angle on these WHEN NEW can vary up to 12 degrees over
the rev range. Mine is 24 years old so I shudder to think what might be
happening now.

"What you need is a Datsun 120Y distributor, with the correct adjustment to
the manual advance." I was informed.

Silly me. Of course a distributor designed to go on a derivation of an
Austin A Series engine is the obvious choice for a Ford Kent engine! It
just goes to show how talking to someone with lots of experience can help.

I'm having the new dizzy fitted and tuned on a dyno next week. I'll let you
know how it goes.

Cheers

Steve Moore
