While not quite as outstanding as the original post, the following did
happen to a couple in our club (MOG-NW):

Some years ago a couple owned a Morgan but ended up selling it to a young
man. Years passed and the longing for a Morgan returned, so a search
ensued resulting in purchase of a car from southern California (with the
assistance of the Wilburns). The car needed quite a lot of work but they
tackled it (the car is a drop-dead gorgeous 4 seater Plus 4). During the
restoration, while thumbing through the phone book looking for a listing,
one of them happened upon the name of the guy they sold the car to. On a
whim, they called and found that the name was actually the uncle of the
person they sold the car to. The young man had been killed in a motorcycle
accident shortly after he bought the Morgan (you can guess the rest...).
The uncle was interested in selling so after more than 10 years, they
bought their original car back and it had only a couple of hundred miles
added in-between. Of course the storage hadn't been proper so it was a bit
tatty but STILL!

True story, it happened to Jean and Rod Roth of Corvallis Oregon.
