Uhmmmm Things aren't looking bright here in Texas, Plus 4 wise !
As I may have mentioned in an earlier post I've pulled the engine from
Duchess to replace the leaking rear main seal. Well when I pulled the crank
I found the front and rear main bearings to be totally trashed. The surface
plating was pealing off like a cheap Earl Scheib paint job. The middle main
and rod bearings all look fine.
Not wanting to do this again for a while I took the crank and block to my
machinist who had some theories but basically was unsure of the cause having
not checked the engine yet.
He did assign me the task of finding some Vandervile bearings to use in the
rebuild rather than the Glacier bearings Moss supplied .
Well heres what I learned today and none of it was good.
The parent company of Glacier bought Vandervile some 10 years ago. Bearings
sold under the name Vandervile ( followed by a "A: stamped on the shell) are
nothing more than Glacier bearings. Glacier bearings are noted for falling
apart and not having very good tolerances. No one else makes bearings
except Glacier and its parent company .
Second bit of bad news is that one of the causes of the bearing breaking up
is a crack in the crank between the # 4 journal and the rear main. So as it
stands right now either I have a bad crank ($$$$) or if the crank was okay
the only bearings I can get are the same junk that broke up.

Anyone got any good news for me :(
