Congratulation Dale!

You've stumbled upon one of the earliest forms of primitive rally computer.
It was already obsolete when I began rallying in 1967 and probably uses the
same gears as the Halda odometer.

The only way to get the right gear ratio is to install the entire setup and
run some measured miles and see exactly how far off you are. If someone can
oblige you with a copy of the manual (rare!) it would tell you which
combination
of large and small gears you would need to get the mileage close. The gears
are
numbered and interchangeable.

I may have some old Halda gears squirreled away. I'll look and see when I
get
home tonight.

PS - Once upon a time I was driving along in my Sunbeam Alpine, with Halda
odometer installed, and I picked up a hitchhiker. The Chap was fascinated
by the device as it spun off the miles to the nearest hundredth and finally
asked about it. The unit bore the logo "Made in Halmstadt, Sweden" which
turned out to be his hometown! And he had never heard of them. Must have
been a small (basement?) industry.

While out at an antique fair a couple of weeks ago (following the wife
around as she looked for Beanie Babies!) I'm on the lookout for things
Morgan, things British cars , and things sporty cars when on a shelf I spot
an interesting instrument.

On closer exam, it is a Halda Speedpilot "Sports Special" "Mark IV". SN is
24815 and it has a tag from "Langwell Instruments, Toronto Canada" on the
case. Attached was a 7,5:1 reduction gear. Wound the clock and it's
working fine. Seems all the inside gears are OK as well (remarkably little
dirt and dust inside the case). Aside from one trim ring mounting screw
that had been twisted off, and a rather unorthodox bend to one of the
instrument mounting brackets, the unit is sound.

After stripping off the badly peeled chrome on the trim ring (nice aluminum,
polished up well and now has a coat of clear lacquer) it looks great.

Questions: Does anyone know if the 7,5:1 reduction gear is appropriate for
a +4 Moss box speedo drive? If not, what is the appropriate reduction
gearing.

Harder questions are does anyone have a manual they can copy for me? If the
7.5:1 reduction is not correct, anyone have a correct size reducer (and
perhaps a speedo T-connect) they want to part with? Not sure yet but this
may be part of a dash rebuild on OLBDII.
