Listers,

There has been a lot of commenting on the "orange peel" problem. I've
noticed this on many new cars in recent years and believe it is the result
of the almost universal adoption of the electrostatic painting technique
among all auto manufacturers. The principle of electrostatically charging
the paint material so that it has the opposite charge of the vehicle body
allows virtually all of the paint to be "attracted" to the body resulting
in fewer airborne particles and a cleaner, safer work environment. Also, it
results in virtually all of the paint arriving on the vehicle therefore
minimum waste. Unfortunately, the paint does not have the smooth finish
obtainable with a hand-sprayed paint job. Improving this does not seem to
have a high priority with the car manufacturers.
