Lucas coils

I'm looking for the resident expert on Lucas coils.  All the coils I
remember playing
With over the years were a silverish case with a black top (where the wires 
connect).  This weekend I found one with a tanish top, and I just heard of
one with
a white top.

Is there any real difference in these coils?  Is the top color indicative of
the era or
Something?
