Ross,

By pumping fluid through the detached line, then reconnecting, you have
left the system full of air.  Air compresses when you step on the pedal
unlike liquid brake fluid -- hence no brakes until you bleed the air out
of the system.  

Brake cylinders are prone to leaks when a car has seen little use which
might well be the case if it is low mileage and like new underneath.
There may even be some corrosion in the wheel cylinders if the fluid has
never been replaced previously. 

Considering the value of the car and your life, why not have a flat bed
move it the 12 miles for $50 to $100 rather than drive there with no
brakes?
