Let me say that no question is dumb. I am just ignorant about some things and
need more guidance on others.
Move it closer to TDC. Initial timing is just about 14 degrees before TDC. This
way the ignition system can have the time to create and generate the spark and
have it ignite the fuel mixture basically right at TDC. It takes a little time
to generate a spark. To retard the timing means that you would move the timing
mark TOWARD TDC. Hence, to make it fire later in the cycle. To advance the
timing, or make it fire earlier, you would move the timing mark away from TDC.
All this is assuming that the timing mark of the harmonic balancer has not
shifted and is in the correct place. Good Luck...Bob Fentress
