It varied each year.  this info is in the free resto package from GM (800 222 
1020)  Bumpers on small trucks were chrome as std up to 1951, then they were 
painted Anvil Gray 52-53 with chrome reintroduced as an option in 54.  
Painted grilles were body color in 47, then in 48 or 49 the backsplash was 
painted white on all grilles till 51 when they went to a light gray.  Chrome 
was std on suburbans all years except during the Korean War.  This is a brief 
overview from memory, and references should be used to confirm.
