I had a similar fright, except I wasn't towing it, I was driving it! I saw
my rear drivers tire pass me after the back end dropped real fast about 2
feet. I safely pulled over (luckily, no one around on a wide open
interstate) & then chased my tire on foot about 400 yds. down the median &
then rolled it back to the truck. Also, luckily, I wasn't traveling very
fast (maybe about 40) & I didn't have the bed on the frame (although I did
have a swap meet load of parts), so no rear body damage. Took a while to
figure out how to jack the thing up from flat on the ground. I guess I was
also lucky again, that all of the lug nuts were kept inside the hub cap by
centrifugal force (even though I could have borrowed them from the other
wheels; I didn't have too).
