In Connecticut any vehicle 10 years old or older has to get inspected
before you register it... If it passes and your vehicle is too old
to be emission tested than your in the clear ... however if its less
than 25 years old you must get the emissions tested, 78 to 88 once
every year and once every 2 years for 88 and newer. Unless you get
pulled over by the county mounty and he denotes defective equipment
then you have to go get it inspected.... The new emissions testing
stations have been contracted out to private enterprise so the state
doesn't have control anymore, however it seems that the testing
agency has taken it upon themselves to "Save us from ourselves" and
goes to extremes to find something wrong so you have to come back...
Fail a second time and pay another $20 for a retest. They need to
drum up business because the state mandated that for cars 10 years
and newer only had to be tested every once every 2 years.. The state
still has some remote testing facilities reserved for special cases
and I have had good luck there. All cars over 25 years have been
grandfathered out of testing for emissions but not for inspection...
If you keep it registered no inspection...However you must show
evidence of insurance everytime you reregister it...(once every two
years) But I do it with my 62 BMW R69S motorcycle to avoid the hassle
with those testing agencys and cancel the insurance after receiving
the new registration. I transfer insurance when the summer time
comes...so I can use the bike.
