Sunday I was over at a friend's shop shooting the breeze about Victrolas
and Roaring Twenties cars and I happened to mention that I liked the old
Chevy pickups and had just such a project underweigh at the moment. Well, my
pal knew of an old Chevy wrecker just around the corner and it was for sale.
He thought the asking price was $300.
Needless to say, I wasted no time making a beeline for the oletruck. It
was an AD truck was sitting next to the curb, right rear tire not only flat
but off the rim. The rims were new looking aluminum custom wheels with some
sort of cover so the lugs were hidden, but with a full floating rear axle
sticking out. The 5 window body looked absolutely straight with no signs of
rust and was painted a bright Screeming Zonkers yellow and lettered on nearly
every surface with information about a body and fender shop.
The doors were of the push button type, the windshield one piece and the
frontend sheetmetal was from a GMC, although with a Chevy medallion and with
an oddball but attractive hood ornament mounted. Turn signals off of a
Superbug were fitted to the top of the fenders. The wrecker portion looked
old, but in good serviceable condition. The lift mechanism looked to be a
worm drive.
Looking through the window, a stick shift was visible, indicating an old
four speed. All the gauges had been replaced with aftermarket stuff, and the
dash had Chevrolet embossed on it. Overall, this looked like a good
servicable truck that had seen years of service and had been "fixed up" as
the years went along.
Sitting on the front seat was a For Sale notice. It described the truck
as a '53. I was pretty excited at the price which DID look to be $300, but
after a moments study a seemingly meaningless squiggle in front of the 3
resolved into a two. I think it says 2300 OBO. The phone was (714) 373-2461
and as of Sunday it was located in Westminster, Orange County, SoCal.
