Am working on rebuilding the front axle of my '59 NAPCO, and have a couple
of questions for you machinist types. I need to manufacture new inner
spindle bushings. The outer race of the CV joint stub axle rides inside the
spindle on a "Bronze" bushing. It only takes a load when 4x4 is engaged.
I'm trying to locate a piece of "Oilite Bronze" round stock 2.25 inches in
diameter and about 5 inches in length to be used to machine 2 new spindle
bushings from. Any ideas? Any materials better suited?
I'm aware of the "Speedy Sleeves" that I can use on worn axle sections
where the oil seal seats, but I have a few needs where the sleeves are not
going to work. I need to do something with the CV Joint axle stub races
that ride in the spindle bushing, and I have a locking hub gear with a
bearing race surface that also needs repair. I've been told that I can have
the sections of my axles that act as bushing races "Hard Chromed" and then
polished down to size. Anyone know of a reputable firm that has these
capabilities?
I'm also wondering if I can turn down the race section of the axle and
custom fit a new bushing to size. Any inputs?
