That outside trim is held by 2 small clutch head screws at the top, under
the window channel, so yes it needs to be removed first.  After getting the
screws out, the trim can be removed verrrry carefully.  Keep working at it,
you need to overlap the edges until the sides come free of the window frame.
I am a total klutz, but with about an hour of work I got mine out with no
damage.
