I'm not so sure of this.....

There is definitely some question about the color of 283's in 58 and 59. As
far as I understand the early V8's were a red-orange color then some
literature shows 283's for 58 and 59 being gray. I don't believe a
definitive answer exists for engine color unless the records for the
production plant could be located, even then history could play a part; like
a strike could force engines to be shipped from a not normally used
facility. etc... JMHO
