You hear all the time a few of the dilemnas faced when replacing the torque
tube rear end with a modern one. You hear about the lug pattern, the brakes,
the driveshaft length and especially about having to cut off the perches and
weld on the correct ones. There IS a better way.
Locate a 55 1st series rear end and the leaf springs. Pretty much end of
story. The leafs bolt right up and the differential sits in the correct
location. Bolt pattern is standard 6 bolt and the bendix brakes work well
with the hucks brakes on the front (47-50). The 3.90 ratio will work great
with the overdrive I installed and the only thing I havent done is located a
driveshaft that will fit. This is a great shortcut and would recommend it to
anyone. Even the shock mounts are correct for using the old shocks.
