interesting topic. I've got a '76 gmc x.member under my truck, and so far
i've found (thanks to this great group) that some rotors are thinner..which
helps with the wider tracking. inevitably, we have to drop these front ends
somehow, and mark has found that drop spindles increase the tracking...not a
desirable feature. It seems that ball joint extenders would possibly change
the geometry of the a frames? good question! In the old days we used to
cut a coil or two, but these days with ssafety a concern, maybe we should
look at the "drop coils" available, since they seem to be the cheapest
alternative, and i could still buy a pair of jeans with the savings..ya
right!
I did want to pass on a bit of info that a local wrecking yard owner gave
me. He said that one could "pocket" the lower control arm. That is, cut
out the area where the spring rests, weld in a piece of 5" diameter or so
pipe by about two or three inches long,..or whatever you want to drop your
front end, and weld in a round blank piece in the bottom of the pipe...this
would make a pocket and let the spring hang thrugh the control arm...prolly
the same effec as drop coils.
