Subject: Rear End

Hello:

I'm currently building a 54 GMC pickup truck from the ground up. Right
now I have it down to the bare frame. I plan on using the 248 CID inline
six, but bored and stroked, with Fenton headers, I have the Howard
intake that takes 5 Strombergs I want to use, so I'll need a slightly
wild cam. I have the original torque tube rear end regeared to 3:55.1
and I'm starting to have concerns that the little spider gears will not
handle the extra torque. I'm thinking about selling this rear end to my
friend who is also building an identical truck, and buying a 9" Ford
rear end for mine. What I don't know, not being a Ford man is what year
do I look for, how much should I pay for it, what will be the difference
if any on width and how do I identify it. I recently just purchased and
installed a Chassis Engineering rear suspension kit. All I would have to
do to install it is get the mounting brackets that go between the rear
end housing and the leaf springs, then have a drive shaft made. What is
your opinion on this matter.
