A couple of years ago I posted my experience with wheels for 3/4 and
one-ton AD pickups. I've gotten quite a few inquiries since then.
I have realized that I've led people astray looking for Ford wheels with
3-3/4 inch backspacing. The Ford wheels in question are 4-1/8 inch
backspacing. However, these will work just fine even with tires as wide as
255 mm (255/85Rx16). You can't use the more common 265/75Rx16. They are too
wide and rub against the box. With the 255's its very close. No problems on
the front.
The Hayes wheel part number is X-45304. This is a 16x6 8-hole wheel. They
cost about $40-45 each. They have nubs to hold hubcaps and no spring clips
for the original Chevrolet caps but I suppose you could drill four holes in
each and rivet the clips you took off your 15 or 17 inch wheels. The
available half-ton clips will not work.
Hope this clears up any misconceptions. I'd like for this correction to
make it onto the website. How is that done?
