Other factors come into play, besides the way the engine is built.
If you plan on using it to tow/haul with the majority of the time or it
won't see much highway use, then a lower (higher numerically) geared rear
is better,
Lot's of highway, no hauling/towing, then a higher (lower numerically)
geared rear is what you'd want.
In between, the 3.2x-3.5x ratios are a good compromise.
