The original (I'm guessing) 216 c.i. low-pressure six in my '49 3/4 ton
feels like it's on its last legs and will barely pull up the hill in front of
my house in 2nd gear of its four-speed transmission. I don't see much point
in overhauling this comparatively small-displacement low-pressure
splash-lubrication engine, and don't want to make the conversion to a
small-block V-8. I would very much appreciate advice from anyone about which
later -model and larger-displacement cubic inch Chevy or GMC carbureted six's
will bolt up to my '49 transmission and motor mounts without major
modification.

I've heard that Chevy and GMC pickups have over the years used
"high-pressure" six's of 235 cubic inches, 245, 261, and that at one time GMC
used a 302 cubic inch six. What do you recommend to replace my low-pressure
216 that will be essentially a bolt-in?

Thanks in advance.
