Yes, Halogen lights put off about 490 watts of heat. They will melt or catch
on fire anything fragile placed within a 1' radius. I only use them outside.
I use a fluorescent trouble light that can run off 12 volts and it works
great.

Racing and restoration friends.  I have never heard of this one happening
before:

This weekend...between watching the twins when my wife needed to go out...I
did three
way duty on vehicles: rebuilding a Rochester Quadrajet for my 86 pickup
(man, are they
ever nasty to do), changing the oil in my wife's Jeep (at least there was
something easy
to do this weekend), and pulling the dash apart on my 86 Corvette
convertible to get to
the radio wiring and amplifier relay that's behind (it's a Bose stereo).

Well, my shop isn't overwhelmed with light so I hung a halogen light right
down above
and by the windshield (on the outside about 6-8 inches away) so I could get
light down
onto the top of the back of the dash (had already pulled the dash pad).
Anyone who been
back there knows that it's a mess and the space is tight and it took me a
long
time...and the halogen light heated up the windshield enough to put a big
crack in
it...I even heard it snap.  (All four wheels were on the ground at the time;
the car was
definitely not flexed.)   I've never seen or even heard of this before and
never
considered that it could get  hot enough to break glass though I know care
must be taken
with halogen lights to avoid getting burns.

So keep halogen lights away from windshields; I guess it could do the same
to rear and
side glass as well.

Question to the BSPers:  I have a race next weekend; will the car pass tech
inspection
with a cracked windshield?  I doubt I can get it fixed in time and so may
have to punt
the next event.

It was a rather snake bit weekend overall.  After all that, I still didn't
get the radio
and speaker amplifier relay working and in fact took a step backward...now
no power at
all on the radio (yes, the fuses are all good and all cables are connected.)
I slid
the radio out while  the battery was disconnected, but I never disconnected
any radio
cabling.  Whatever...round two of debugging to begin...
