3.55 is the lowest number made for your rear end. I think that if you go any
lower your 248 will run out of torque anyway and you will get bad gas
milage. You might go for slightly taller tires at the same time, it will be
good.

Howdy,
I have a 1951 GMC Suburban (4800 pounds) 248 motor, 411 rear end, original
four speed. Can anyone tell me if I should go to something other than a
355,
I'm told I will only gain 15% in speed with a 355, in other words 55 to
64mph,
not that I plan to go faster than 65, but wouldn't it be better to slow the
motor down even more. What is the next gears 338, 311, 243, ? It does not
seem that I'm gaining much. Understand I'm not hot roding, just stock, on
the
road, every day. I've got someone that sets up rear ends every day, to put
it
in for me, I'm just trying to know which way to go, before I spend this big
bucks. If there are better gears to go for, who do I buy them from...
Is 355 best thing to do?
thanks for any info
