Alain, if you look on engine behind where dist goes in, is a smooth angled
spot with numbers and letters. This is best
# to ID engine. I have a book with those in it. OR, if you look lower by the
fuel pump and draft tube there is an engine
cast #. Also one just above or behind the starter, may have to remove it to
see. Need to clean these areas off good with'
brush and cleaners. ONe behind starter will be like Con 4    for conveyor in
factory a letter for the month and a number
for the year of  manufacture. Usuall just one number, not two.  Look for
those and we'll  go from there. I always thought by 56 most had an 848
ending on the head #. Maybe that's late years. Have you tried
www.inliners.org? or www.stovebolt.com for # help? Seems like one vendor,
maybe Chevy Duty has ID list on there sites. Stovebolt site has
links to these and other sites.
