A while back I had the same problem with my '53 after rebuilding the front
end and putting new shackles on the front and rear. I scratched my head
thinking how I was going to do this and I even tried the "forza bruta"
approach, them my dad came looked at the whole thing and by using two jacks,
one of the frame and other on the leaf springs and adding weight to the
truck we were able to put the leaf springs without too much problem.

       Actually, "relaxing" would indicate LOSS of tension, and they would
be
LONGER, not shorter. :D  The rear shackles should pivot and swing forward
enough to engage the holes.  Are the stock front leafs shorter than the
rears, and they got mixed up if you got both sets replaced? Just a
thought....
