In the early 80's I had a 50 GMC mounted on what I was told was the chassis
and running gear from a military ambulance. It had duals (not tandem) in
the rear, 4-wheel drive and a Dodge flathead 6. I've often regretted
selling that beast.

Bob, thanks for the lead on Differential Engineering...very interesting.
Have
you considered picking up a 2-1/2 ton 6x6 from somewhere like
http://www.govliquidation.com/ , recycling the cab and bed, setting your
GMC pickup cab and
bed on this baby (torchwork may be required), and cruising the land with the
toughest AD/AfterAD on the road? I only know about military things that
float,
or used to float, but I heard somewhere 6x6's come with a diesel engine big
enough to move Texas closer to, or further from--your choice, Arizona.
