Help! I'm trying to put the column shifter back in my 57 TF...I have the
shift lever installed, the shifter attached to the steering column and shift
lever, and am tweeking the shifter rods to the transmission (had to make short
rod). What is the proper way to adjust the linkage, and how can I check the
shifter to be sure it is working properly?

I converted my '48 from a 4-speed to a column shifter and have gone through
this same process. I didn't have to make any rods, but did figure out how to
make everything work. Start by placing the transmission in neutral with the
linkage still disconnected. The attach one of the shift rods to the
corresponding arm on the trans. Adjust the length until the shifter lever is
also in the
neutral position. The connect the other shift rod into the other shift arm
and adjust the linkage so it also is in neutral. This should be very close.
Some minor tweeking should lead to smooth shifts up and down. Good luck.
