Are any others of you out there running an "open" system like ours?

If you mean "open" in not having a sealed, pressurized cooling system, yes.
My radiator has a small leak at the top. When I put the cap on tight, it
leaks. To "get by" I left it at the first notch, thinking I would get the
radiator repaired later. That was about 6 years ago. I check it often and do
have
to add coolant (premixed) on occasion. The old 235 seems to do fine.
