Brian, without saying that you or they are right, if everybody else thinks
one thing, you might want to hear what they are saying. Radiators do wear out.
With the water flow, the harsh chemicals, the heating-cooling cycles, age and
vibration, radiators will wear out from the inside out. If you have one
little leak now, it might become several leaks in the weeks to come.
The other reason most shops want to recore an older radiator, is after
repairing a hole, they are going to pressure test it to make sure the leak is
fixed. If the radiator has much age to it, the metal in the cores is pretty
thin
from wear. It will not hold up to the pressure test, and result in trying to
patch all the little leaks that show up under pressure. The pressure they use
for
testing is higher than what is normal during driving conditions. They are
covering their rearends, because if it starts to leak again, in a couple of
weeks, you are going to be mad, and want them to fix it again for free.
