Mine is a 5 blade fixed (no flex, no clutch) that is NOT original
equipment. It was on my truck when I bought it in 1990 along with an
old Sears under-dash A/C unit an a York compressor. Clearance between
the fan and the shroud is about 3/8" and the fan sticks into the shroud
about 1/2 the "thickness" of the blades. When I first got it there was
about a 1" gap between the top of the radiator and the forward top edge
of the shroud allowing some under hood (hot) air to recycle through the
fan instead of pulling all new air through the radiator. This was
before I changed out my partially clogged radiator core. Closing up
that gap made the difference between boiling over (or shutting down the
A/C) in heavy traffic or not. With the new (actually now probably 8
years old) core it never gets anywhere near that warm.

All,
I am all too familiar with Houston weather and recently refreshed my
mind on north Texas as well. What is your fan situation? Flex fan,
stock fan, late model fan and clutch? Still need to figure out a shroud
and reservoir. Curious, as I just put a refurbished 4 core in my 46 and
relocated it forward of the core support and have a couple of inches
clearance now...opposed to the factory 1/2. Could move it out a bit
more if a clutch and higher pitched fan is decided on. Thoughts. Brett
