My 57 had two plates, the one at the top of the A pillar had the VIN
embossed into it and that is the important plate as far as getting
registered.
The lower plate on mine, on the front of the door opening, has been
painted over since I got the truck and has nothing embossed on it. On
trucks I've seen in the junkyard this plate just says something like
Chevrolet Motor Division and has the paint code number on it. I think
that's the one you are talking about.
