The frame material is just mild steel. I boxed the frame on a '54 years ago and
it came out nice but was a lot of work. Stiffened it to make a 3/4 ton truck
but keep it looking like a 3100.

A front crossmember can be bought cheaper than you can make one and they
pretty much drop in. The rear of the transmission can usually be supported
with a piece of 3" channel bolted to the bottom flanges of the frame.
