You didn't say which part of the country you live in and that can make a
difference due to cost of materials, cost of labor (which also depends on the
state of the local economy), building requirements, etc.
Fine Homebuilding had a very short article/sidebar on this very subject within
the last 6 months or so, I will try to look it up in the next couple of days.
I have found that you will receive some level of information during the process
of requesting quotes, if you ask a few questions. Their answers will tend to
give you insight into what the local market will bear.
