Interesting discussion, however I was considering the
filter route when I was visiting a race car shop (vintage
racers) and the guy had all this filter garbage fittings, etc.
laying around his tank, but not in use.  Instead, he said
that they didn't work any better than running the solvent
through a coffee filter type of unit.  He simply set it on
the unit's work area and turned on the pump.  Ran the
metal flex hose into the filter and it eventually got the
contaminants removed.
Maybe a low effort suggestion to try??
