Here's my data point for you:

I used to have a Sony 900 MHz digital spread spectrum phone with which I
could go outside, across the street, and most of the way around to the back
of my neighbor's house and still have perfect reception (somewhere in the
neighborhood of 200 ft. from the base station).  In fact, I never went far
enough away in my neighborhood to see where the reception stopped.  This was
great.

After five or six years that phone died and I replaced it with a couple of
2.4 GHz digital phones (one GE, one Uniden).  I can't even go out into my
driveway (approximately 35 feet from the base station) with these before the
static overwhelms the conversation.
