Phil,
The "original" size was 145-13.  The next step up, keeping the same outer
diameter is the 165/70.  This will fit with no problems from all I know
(if you are using a sensible offset).  The next step up is 185/60.  Again,
same diameter.  This is a BIG step, because it is pretty much the smallest
size in which real performance tires are available.  Responses of wether
this fits or not have been 50/50.  If I was you, I would have a 185/60 put
on a rim and just try it out!  If you go to the right tire place, they
shouldn't even charge you for this.  Plus, I would be very greatful to you
for trying this out! :-)

What kind of rims are you using?
Does anyone know of a good performance tire in 165/70?  Something
comparable to a Yoko AVS Intermediate...

P.S.:  I don't know, but it might make a difference if your car is 1/4 or
       1/2 ellipticly sprung.
